The Portland Fire Department responded to a two-alarm fire that broke out early Tuesday morning in the city’s West End.

Keith Gautreau, a fire department spokesman, said the fire at 19 Dow St., a three-story apartment building, was reported at 12:02 a.m.

Gautreau said the building had several tenants living in six units, but everyone made it out safely. The fire started in the ceiling of a second-floor apartment before spreading to a third-floor apartment. There was moderate damage to the two apartments.

Central Maine Power cut power to the building to make it safe for crews to battle the fire. Police had to shut down Dow Street to Congress Street for a few hours.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
