FALMOUTH — The town and Maine Department of Transportation are poised to announce what officials called “a unique partnership that will create private development opportunities.”
DOT spokesman Ted Talbot said the agency will be giving Falmouth land near the intersection of Route 1 and the Maine Turnpike Spur.
A press conference announcing the partnership is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 7, at 10:30 a.m. at the Central Fire Station, 8 Bucknam Road. DOT Commissioner David Bernhardt and town staff are expected to attend, according to a Wednesday press release.
Neither Talbot nor town officials would divulge any specific information about the partnership. Talbot said the town has been working on designs and is expected to issue a request for proposals.
“It’s an awfully good move for the town and the state,” Talbot said.
A large-scale redevelopment of Route 1 infrastructure south of Bucknam Road concluded last summer after nearly a year and a half of construction. The area around the spur, from Bucknam Road north to the Cumberland town line, was not improved.
The town has also been working on plans to renovate portions of Route 100 in West Falmouth.
