ANDOVER, N.H. — A former Andover selectman and Nashua police chief has been killed in a fire that started in a brush pile.

It happened outside the home of Don Gross in Andover on Thursday afternoon.

The man had already succumbed to his injuries by the time Andover police, fire and emergency personnel arrived on the scene.

Andover selectwoman Victoria Mischon confirms to NH1 that Gross was the man who died. He was 65.

NH1 reports Gross had worked as a police officer for 32 years. He retired from the Nashua police force in 2004, after spending four years as the police chief.

The New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office says it won’t be releasing the man’s name until after an autopsy, which is scheduled for Friday.

The investigation is ongoing.
