PORTLAND (AP) — A grant from the Maine Cancer Foundation is designed to improve collaboration between Maine Medical Center Research Institute and Eastern Maine Medical Center Cancer Care.

The two organizations are getting $200,000 each to improve “biobanks” that distribute patient tissue samples to researchers. The Maine Cancer Foundation says researchers will have easier access to samples needed to conduct leading-edge research.

The awards will also fund a new web portal to streamline researchers’ ability to request and acquire the samples.

Maine Medical Center and Eastern Maine Medical Center are the two largest hospitals in the state. Both sent grant proposals to Maine Cancer Foundation to expand their biobanks.
