FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The New England Patriots placed linebacker Jerod Mayo on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, ending his season.

Mayo, 29, was injured in Saturday’s victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mayo played in all 16 regular-season games and totaled 49 tackles and one sack.

New England will play the Denver Broncos on Sunday for a spot in Super Bowl 50. The Patriots are attempting to be the first team to repeat as NFL champions since they did it in 2003-04.

EAGLES: The Eagles hired former Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz to be their defensive coordinator.

Schwartz was the first assistant brought in by new head coach Doug Pederson. He last coached in 2014 as Buffalo’s defensive coordinator.

Pederson announced the hiring at his introductory news conference on Tuesday. Pederson also said he would retain from Chip Kelly’s staff offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland and special teams coach Dave Fipp. Running backs coach Duce Staley also is expected to remain.

Buccaneers: Tampa Bay added four more assistant coaches to the staff of new coach Dirk Koetter.

Koetter began filling his staff after being promoted from offensive coordinator to coach last week, hiring former Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith as defensive coordinator.

The team announced that Nate Kaczor joins Tampa Bay as special teams coordinator. Mark Duffner is the new linebackers coach, Jay Hayes will coach the defensive line, and Jon Hoke joins the Bucs as defensive backs coach.

Steelers: The Steelers signed offensive lineman Chris Hubbard and fullback Roosevelt Nix to one-year contract extensions.

PACKERS: Coach Mike McCarthy intends to keep calling the offensive plays for the Packers.

But he has two vacancies on his staff after running backs coach Sam Gash and tight ends coach Jerry Fontenot were fired.

The process of figuring out what went wrong in 2015 started this week for McCarthy after the Packers lost to Arizona 26-20 in overtime in the NFC playoffs to finish 11-7.

McCarthy took back play-calling responsibilities in December from associate head coach Tom Clements. McCarthy had adjusted staff assignments before the season in order to focus more on defense and special teams, but reverted back to play-caller with the offense struggling.

McCarthy has said he anticipated Clements would return, though Gash and Fontenot were let go.

Gash was with the team for two seasons. Eddie Lacy ran for more than 1,100 yards in 2014, but gained just 758 this past season on 187 carries.

McCarthy has said that Lacy did not have a good offseason last year and it carried over to this past season. Lacy was disciplined for tardiness the night before a game, and McCarthy had concerns about Lacy’s weight.

Fontenot leaves the Packers after joining the team in 2006 as a coaching intern.

WASHINGTON: A lawyer for receiver Pierre Garcon says the player has voluntarily dropped his lawsuit against daily fantasy sports website FanDuel after settling out of court.

The lawyer, Brian Murphy, says Garcon and FanDuel “resolved the matter on confidential terms.”

Garcon filed suit in October in federal court in Maryland, where Washington plays home games, accusing FanDuel of using his name and likeness in TV ads and on its website without his consent.

A spokesperson for FanDuel, which has a marketing partnership with the team, declined comment.

The daily fantasy industry attracted additional scrutiny in recent months after a multimillion-dollar advertising blitz at the start of the NFL season.
