Dufner beats Lingmerth on second playoff hole

Jason Dufner won the CareerBuilder Challenge in La Quinta, California, with a par on the second hole of a playoff Sunday, taking advantage of David Lingmerth’s shot off the rocks that bounced into the water.

Dufner finished with a 2-under 70 on PGA West’s TPC Stadium Course to match Lingmerth at 25-under 263. Lingmerth closed with a 65.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Rickie Fowler won the Abu Dhabi Championship for his fourth worldwide victory in nine months, shooting a 3-under 69 in his final round to win by one stroke, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

SKIING

WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: Lindsey Vonn won a super-G for her 11th career victory in Cortina D’Ampezzo, Italy, breaking the resort record of retired Austrian standout Renate Goetschl.

MEN’S WORLD CUP: Henrik Krist- offersen used a blistering second run to win a slalom in Kitzbuehel, Austria, for his fifth victory of the season and ninth overall.

FIGURE SKATING

U.S. CHAMPIONSHIPS: Adam Rippon earned 182.74 points for his free skate for a total of 270.75 to win his first U.S. title, in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Max Aaron received 177.72 points for a 269.55 total. Nathan Chen, who fell on a triple axel, had 180.60 points for an overall score of 266.93.

SOCCER

PREMIER LEAGUE: Diego Costa gave Chelsea a 1-0 victory over 10-man Arsenal, damaging its London rival’s bid to dethrone them as Premier League champions.

Chelsea already looked the livelier team when it gained a man advantage in the 18th minute, following Per Mertesacker’s red card.

NFL: Todd Monken is leaving Southern Mississippi to be the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

n Giants quarterback Eli Manning, 49ers wide receiver Anquan Boldin and Saints tight end Benjamin Watson are the three finalists for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.
