A third Republican has filed papers to run for the 1st District U.S. House seat now held by Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree of North Haven.

Barry D. Stephens of Scarborough filed candidacy papers late last week with the Federal Election Commission.

Stephens’ website says he has been involved with the energy-efficient building industry and has lectured across North America about indoor air quality and energy efficiency. He is director of business development and technology for Zehnder America Inc.

His website says Stephens wants to make Maine a “better place to start a business, start a family, live in retirement and enjoy life.”

He is the third Republican so far to challenge Pingree, who is running for re-election in November.

Mark Irving Holbrook of Brunswick declared last November that he intended to run. Ande Smith of North Yarmouth announced his candidacy this month.
