THE FREEPORT HIGH SCHOOL Nordic boys ski team won the Western Maine Conference ‘Skate’ Championship on Tuesday at Starks Hill in Fryeburg. The Falcons garnered 24 points to easily out-distance runner-up Falmouth. The ‘Classic’ will be held on Saturday.

FRYEBURG — The Freeport High School boys Nordic ski team captured the “Skate” portion of the Western Maine Conference Championship on Tuesday at Starks Hill.

The Falcons easily out-distanced runner-up Falmouth, 24-43. Merriconeag-Waldorf School was third, followed by Fryeburg Academy and Yarmouth.

Freeport placed four skiers in the top eight, led by Bennett Hight’s third-place finish in 13:34.4. Yacob Olins (sixth, 14:00.8), Nathan Smail (seventh, 14:03.2) and Kyle Dorsey (eighth, 14:11.2) skied solidly, along with John Smail (12th, 14:53.9).

Tucker Pierce of Merriconeag Waldorf School finished first in 13:05.6, just ahead of runner-up John Lane of Yarmouth (13:11.5).

The Freeport girls also had a solid day, taking third.

The Falcons finished with 68 points, with Yarmouth first with 21 and Merriconeag

Waldorf School second with 38 points. Fryeburg Academy and Gray-New Gloucester rounded out the top five.

Gray-New Gloucester’s Kaelyn Woods was the top finisher, crossing the finish line in 15:03.1. Sophia Laukli of Yarmouth was second in 15:28.4.

Freeport’s Lily Johnston took sixth, coming in at 15:47.3. Other scorers for the Falcons were Lily Horne (19th, 18:56.7), Allison Greuel (22nd, 19:33.4) and Chloe Davidson (29th, 20:21.6).

Freeport competes on Saturday in the “Classic.”
