POLAND — John Fossett scored 32 points and grabbed 12 rebounds Tuesday night to lead eighth-seeded Poland to a 72-48 victory against ninth-ranked Oak Hill in a Class B South schoolboy basketball prelim.

The Knights (9-10) will meet top-ranked Lake Region (16-2) in a quarterfinal at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Portland Expo.

Poland opened a three-point lead in the first quarter, then steadily expanded the margin to as many as 30 points in the fourth.

Nate Chouinard added 14 points for the Knights. Connor Elwell and Marcus Bailey dropped in 12 each for the Raiders (6-13).

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

MADISON 39, WAYNFLETE 38: Madeline Wood sank a pair of free throws with less than four seconds left and the fourth-ranked Bulldogs (12-7) held on to defeat 13th-seeded Waynflete (7-12) in a Class C South prelim at Madison.

Madison (12-7) will take on 12th-ranked Traip Academy (8-11) in the quarterfinals at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Augusta Civic Center.

After Wood’s foul shots gave Madison a 39-35 lead, Lydia Giguere of Waynflete hit a 3-pointer with two seconds left, but the Flyers were unable to regain possession.

Wood finished with 11 points to lead a balanced Madison offense. Giguere scored 16 and Annika Brooks 12 for Waynflete.

TRAIP ACADEMY 55, HEBRON ACADEMY 21: Marina Casey scored a game-high 14 points as the 12th-seeded Rangers (8-11) downed the fifth-ranked Lumberjacks (8-5) in a Class C South prelim at Hebron.

Traip will meet fourth-seeded Madison (12-7) in a quarterfinal at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Augusta Civic Center.

After a back-and-forth first quarter that saw Traip build a 14-9 lead, the Rangers combined to go on a 29-4 run over the next two quarters.

Cassidy Delano added 11 points for the Rangers.

Franceska Halloran made three 3-pointers and finished with 12 points for Hebron.

WATERVILLE 49, OCEANSIDE 37: Jordan Jabar scored 15 points to lead the seventh-seeded Purple Panthers (9-10) over the 10th-ranked Mariners (8-11) in a Class A North prelim at Waterville.

Makenna Brooks led the Mariners with 14 points, followed by Alexis Mazurek with 11.

Waterville will meet second-seeded Messalonskee (15-3) in the quarterfinals at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Augusta Civic Center.

YARMOUTH 3, PORTLAND/DEERING 2: Christopher Romano scored a pair of goals as the Clippers (13-2) held off Portland/Deering (4-11) at Yarmouth.

Cooper May broke a 1-1 tie 30 seconds into the third period for Yarmouth.

NOTES

Liz Lane and Katy Bryan, both from Maine and four-year members of the Brewster Academy’s girls’ soccer team, signed letters of intent to play for Division 1 schools next year.

Lane, from Parsonsfield, will play for the University of New Hampshire. Bryan, from Sanford, will play for Boston College.
