The Westbrook Police Department will hold its second “Coffee with a Cop” event Friday, Feb. 12, from 8-10 a.m. at Corsetti’s, 125 Bridgton Road.

The department began hosting the quarterly event in September, hoping to provide residents with a chance to ask questions or voice concerns to local police officers.

It is one of a number of new initiatives Police Chief Janine Roberts has rolled out since being hired as chief in 2014.

However, the event has come into some criticism by a Westbrook resident who said he’s concerned with the decision to host Coffee with a Cop at Corsetti’s. Hank McCarvel, who has written to city officials as well as a letter to the editor for this week’s American Journal, said the variety store, which is owned by the Sarchi family, was once owned by Rocco Corsetti. Corsetti was arrested for cocaine trafficking in 2009, but according to McCarvel, Corsetti still frequents the restaurant.

“I applaud Chief Roberts, Officer Joel Loranger, and the rest of the Westbrook Police Department for community initiatives such as Coffee with a Cop. However, with the number of Westbrook variety stores and coffee shops that are run by law-abiding proprietors, I feel that it sort of leaves a ‘bad taste in one’s mouth’ if the Westbrook Police Department chooses to hold their Coffee with a Cop event in an establishment that bears the name of a convicted drug trafficker,” McCarvel said in his letter to the American Journal.

“My general approach to hosting ‘Coffee with a Cop,’ and all other aspects of service the Westbrook Police Department provides, is to serve all neighborhoods, businesses, residents, and visitors. We are not selective,” Roberts said Tuesday.

Another police department community event is scheduled for next week. The community policing office on Brown Street will host a sledding party, which is being called the “Brown Street Blizzard Bash.” On Thursday, Feb. 18, from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m., residents are invited to the sledding hill near St. Hyacinth’s, on the corner of Walker and Brown streets.

According to a notice for the event, there will be hot cocoa and snacks, as well as other games. At the top of the hill, there will be crafts in the meeting room at Hyacinth Place. For more information, contact community policing coordinator Megan Perry at 329-7764.
