Scarborough’s Clarissa Jones has broken the record for the most points scored by a girl’s basketball player at the Greater Portland Christian School in South Portland with a total of 929 regular season career points.
The old record was 928 points and was set 30 years ago by Jen Allen, who graduated with the class of 1986. Jones is a four-year starter for the Greater Portland Christian School Lions, who play in Class D, and has been playing basketball since the age of 9.
David Farrington, from the class of 1985, holds the school’s overall basketball scoring record with more than 1,300 points, according to Chris Spaulding, the athletic director at Greater Portland Christian School.
Spaulding said it’s likely that Jones would have also have broken the 1,000-point mark if she hadn’t sustained a season-ending ankle injury in her sophomore year. That year she was on pace for her best season, scoring an average of 19 points per game, he said.
The Greater Portland Christian School plays an 18-game basketball season and its opponents include Hebron Academy, Waynflete and Rangeley Lakes Regional, which it will face in the state championship playoffs being held next week at the Augusta Civic Center.
Jones began playing for the varsity basketball team at Greater Portland Christian School while she was still in eighth grade, according to her mother, Christine. At that time Clarissa was just 13.
Clarissa Jones said her favorite things about sports include the competition, as well as the friendships she’s formed throughout her years of playing. In addition to basketball, she also plays soccer, where she’s been a five-year starter, transitioning from goalie to a field player.
Breaking the basketball scoring record “means the world,” Jones said, although she was not aware how close she was to breaking the record until afterward. And while sports has taken a lot of her time and energy, Jones “just loves (to play)” and is “so happy” she’s been able to accomplish so much while still in high school.
“I am so proud of her,” Christine Jones said of her daugther, noting it’s “bittersweet that she would have had 1,000 points had she not hurt her ankle as a sophomore.”
Clarissa Jones is hoping to play basketball in college and she plans to attend either the University of Southern Maine or the Southern Maine Community College in South Portland. She’s been a student at Greater Portland Christian School since kindergarten.
In addition, her younger brother, Mason, also attends the school where he is a sophomore. Mason is a three-sport athlete and plays basketball, soccer and baseball.
