EAST BOOTHBAY — Bigelow Laboratory is opening two new centers that will focus on seafood security and the opening of the Arctic Ocean.
The new centers are part of the laboratory’s Centers for Venture Research initiative. The centers are designed to use business techniques used by investors. Lab Executive Director Graham Shimmield says the centers will translate scientific research so it can be used to develop products and inform policy decisions.
The lab says the Arctic Ocean center will have the ability to document and forecast environmental changes. It will also help develop science-based solutions for problems in the Arctic.
Bigelow also says the seafood security center will be able to assess ecological impacts of wild-caught and aquaculture-based seafood. It will also analyze the safety of seafood for human consumption.
