Literary Fieldtrip: Uncle Tom’s Cabin Exhibit at USM in Portland

Friday, Feb. 12 at 11 a.m.

Join the library at the University of Southern Maine in Portland’s Glickman Library to view the temporary exhibit “Visualizing Uncle Tom through the Decades: a Story Told in Illustration.” Susie Bock, coordinator of Special Collections and director of the Jean Byers Sampson Center for Diversity in Maine, will lead the tour through the exhibit. See how illustrations in author Harriet Beecher Stowe’s classic “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” as well as other artwork, depicted stereotypes of African-Americans. Along with touring the exhibition, participants will be able to view material from USM’s African-American Collection of Maine. Attendees are encouraged to read “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” The library is arranging for a group tour and will provide directions; participants must provide their own transportation.
