OAKLAND — A man was reportedly in critical condition after crashing his car into a ditch on Oak Street Thursday afternoon.

According to Oakland Police Officer Mike Sayers, the man was driving a Dodge Neon north toward Fairfield when the vehicle veered to the right. The driver, whose name wasn’t immediately released, swerved to the left, over-corrected and hit an embankment on the left-hand side of the road, Sayers said.

The car was airborne and landed in the roadside ditch, Sayers said. The crash was reported at approximately 2 p.m.

The man was the only person in the car at the time of the crash. Emergency crews had to extricate him from the vehicle, and LifeFlight helicopter took him for additional treatment, Sayers said. He did not release the driver’s name.

Police closed the road to investigate the accident. Sayers said that drugs may have been involved in the crash, but didn’t elaborate.

Oakland Police Capt. Rick Stubbert said later Thursday afternoon he wasn’t sure what hospital the driver was sent to. The crash is still under investigation, he added.
