When nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court, Antonin Scalia and Anthony Kennedy were given prompt hearings and timely confirmation votes. In those less obstructed times, both nominees were confirmed without a dissenting vote, each in no more than several months. Kennedy was confirmed as a justice less than a year before Ronald Reagan left office.

I write to ask Maine’s U.S. senators to actively advocate for a timely confirmation process that avoids needless delay and fills the vacancy on the people’s highest court.

Thirty years ago, would Scalia have wanted any less?
