Referring to Jane Sloven’s letter of Feb. 10 on the closing of St. Andre’s group home for pregnant women and its adoption program:

I was reminded of an interview I saw on Bill Moyers’ TV program “Now” on Nov. 12, 2004.

At that time, he interviewed Sister Joan Chittister, who is an activist and a sought-after speaker on subjects such as world peace and human rights. Here is an excerpt from her conversation with Moyers:

“I do not believe that just because you’re opposed to abortion, that that makes you pro-life. In fact, I think in many cases your morality is deeply lacking if all you want is a child born but not a child fed, not a child educated, not a child housed. And why would I think that you don’t? Because you don’t want any tax money to go there. That’s not pro-life. That’s pro-birth.”

The Feb. 12 editorial (“Our View: ‘Pro-family’ forces failing as advocates for women, children”) reinforces the fact that abortion foes are not supporting measures that would help women before and after their babies are born.

By not speaking out against state funding cuts that forced the closure of an agency’s home for pregnant women and its adoption program, they become pro-birth but not pro-life.
