MONTPELIER, Vt. — Vermont’s lone member of the U.S. House said Friday he would vote for Bernie Sanders in next month’s presidential primary and next summer at the Democratic National Convention.

Speaking Friday on Vermont Public Radio, Rep. Peter Welch said that the U.S. senator from Vermont has inspired a younger generation to get involved in politics.

“The other thing I’ve observed as he’s run this remarkable campaign is how many young people are coming in,” Welch said on the show. “And the regeneration of democracy requires the renewal that comes with younger people coming in, so that’s a good thing.”

Welch is one of 10 Vermont Democratic superdelegates who are free to cast their ballots as they choose during the presidential nominating convention.

Some of Vermont’s other superdelegates, including U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy and Gov. Peter Shumlin, are backing former Hillary Clinton.

There are 712 Democratic superdelegates, about 30 percent of the 2,382 delegates needed to claim the nomination.
