Re: “Effort to put statue of Margaret Chase Smith in U.S. Capitol stalls” (Feb. 29):

Margaret Chase Smith deserves a sculpture. Whether in Washington or Maine, she should be honored for her service.

When I first came to Maine 50 years ago, I was well aware of her as a respected senator, though I was far less politically minded than I am today.

The recent discussion about replacing the statues in Washington was the first mention of her name I have heard in many years.

We would be remiss in not recognizing this remarkable woman, who was way ahead of her time and who epitomized fairness and clear-thinking – qualities we sorely need today.
