A Skowhegan man was arrested Thursday after allegedly threatening another man with a knife and then punching a police officer in the face as the officer tried to arrest him.

Larry Don James Jr., 26, is charged with criminal threatening, assault, refusing to submit to arrest or detention and assault on a police officer.

Police went to Mri Drive in Skowhegan around noon on Thursday in response to a report of a disturbance, said Detective Sgt. Josh King of the Skowhegan Police Department. He said James was threatening another man with a knife.

Police tried to arrest James on a charge of criminal threatening, but King said he refused to put his hands behind his back and punched Officer Michael Bachelder in the face.

Bachelder was not injured seriously, nor was the man who was allegedly threatened, he said.

James was taken to the Somerset County Jail.
