WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Bowdoin College opened its baseball season Tuesday by sweeping a doubleheader from Utica, winning 5-3 and 8-1.

Evann Dumont-LaPointe tripled home a run and scored on a balk to give Bowdoin the lead in the opener. Luke Cappellano and Colby Joncas then scored on a two-run error to put Bowdoin ahead in the second game.

In the opener, Bowdoin overcame a 2-1 deficit when Sawyer Billings led off the fourth inning with a single and scored on Dumont-LaPointe’s triple. The Polar Bears added runs in the fifth and sixth to make it 5-2 before Utica (0-4) scored in its final at-bat. Chad Martin of Bowdoin drove in two runs on two hits and also scored.

In the second game, the Polar Bears rallied for three fifth-inning runs after falling behind 1-0 in the first. Joncas and Cappellano opened the inning with consecutive singles. Brandon Lopez followed with a ball that was misplayed by the pitcher, allowing two runs to score. Lopez ended up on third before scoring on a sacrifice fly. Bowdoin put the game away with five more in the sixth. Jack Wilhoite finished with two RBI, and Lopez, Joncas and Cappellano each scored twice.

SOFTBALL

MAINE, WISCONSIN- GREEN BAY SPLIT: Molly Flowers struck out nine in a no-hitter as Maine (5-6) earned a split with a 6-0 victory against the Phoenix (8-18) at Clearwater, Florida. Wisconsin-Green Bay won the first game 11-3 in five innings.

In the second game, Rachel Carlson had three hits with an RBI and a run for the Black Bears. Rachel Harvey added a pair of hits, including a home run and two RBI.

In the opener, Maine took a 1-0 lead on Maddie Derrick’s homer in the second. But Green Bay responded with four runs in the second and five in third.

MEN’S LACROSSE

COLBY 11, EMMANUEL 6: Colton Michel notched four goals and two assists as Colby (2-2) beat the Saints (1-5) at Boston.

Kevin Seiler added two goals and and assist, and Kevin Beil scored twice. Jack Bratches, Garen Fabian and Tucker Dietrick also scored for the Mules.

Emmanuel pulled within 8-6 in the fourth quarter before Colby then ran off three consecutive goals.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 10, ST. JOSEPH’S 3: Alex Zadworny and Andrew Curro scored twice each as the University of New England (3-4) got the final six goals to pull away from the Monks (1-4) in Portland.

Dan Auger assisted on four goals – two by Mitch Mullin – to give UNE a 4-1 halftime lead.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

BATES 13, ROGER WILLIAMS 4: Moriah Greenstein had three goals and three assists, and Alex Briody added three goals, leading the Bobcats (6-0) to a victory over Roger Williams (3-1) at Bristol, Rhode Island.

HAMILTON 12, BOWDOIN 6: Margaret Gabriel had three goals and an assist, and Morgan Fletcher added three goals to lead the Continentals (3-1, 2-1 NESCAC) past Bowdoin (1-3, 0-3) at Bradenton, Florida.
