South Berwick’s police chief has been found guilty of illegally baiting deer and hunting on a stand overlooking bait.

Chief Dana Lajoie was issued a summons in the fall, according to South Berwick Town Manager Perry Ellsworth.

A Penobscot County jury handed up its decision Thursday and a judge imposed $900 in fines, according to WLBZ television station in Bangor.

Lajoie was accused of placing apples in various locations along an ATV trail to attract deer, the news station reported.

Ellsworth said Lajoie had not been disciplined by the town and he was not sure if he would be.

He said Lajoie has been a member of the town’s department for more than 30 years and chief for most of that time.
