JUPITER, Fla. — Matt Harvey will not make his scheduled start Tuesday, and may have to miss opening day with what the Mets have described as a non-orthopedic injury.

Manager Terry Collins stressed Harvey does not have an injury to his right arm or elbow.

“A non-baseball medical issue we have to address. It came up this morning as far as I know,” General Manager Sandy Alderson said Monday.

“There will be some follow-up tests and consultation and that will take place over the next couple of days so he won’t pitch tomorrow.”

Harvey did not travel with the Mets to their Grapefruit League game Monday, and the team said Harvey was visiting a non-orthopedic doctor and would still pitch Tuesday. But after the Mets lost 3-1 to the Cardinals, Collins announced Harvey would not make his last Grapefruit League start.

The right-hander will not pitch in any more games before Sunday’s opening day, and the team will wait to see what the diagnosis is, and how that affects his availability for opening day. Alderson cautioned it’s too early to make contingency plans for Sunday’s start at Kansas City, but Collins acknowledged the team may need to make alternative plans.

Harvey is scheduled to make the first opening day start of his career.

“It’s hard to say right now. Don’t know just yet,” Collins said.

“What I do know, I’m not sure – we’re very lucky to have the pitching we have in case he can’t go, we’ll have someone else ready.”

Harvey may travel back to New York, and Alderson said he believed Harvey is still in Florida.

The general manager was informed by the medical staff Monday about the issue, and said his understanding is Harvey informed the training staff of a symptom and it is still being investigated.

“I think we need to wait for more medical information before we decide that it’s of concern or great concern or no concern,” Alderson said.

If Harvey has to miss opening day it throws a wrench into the team’s plan, but the Mets can alter their plans this week to accommodate.

The logical choices to replace Harvey would either be Steven Matz or Monday’s starter, Bartolo Colon, since Noah Syndergaard is still slated to pitch Wednesday. Jacob deGrom may not be available against the Royals since his wife is due to give birth April 5.

Sean Gilmartin starts for Harvey against Miami on Tuesday.

“I’m not getting into that. It’s way too premature for us to be discussing anything related to opening day,” Alderson said.

“I understand opening day is not too far away but we’re dealing with tomorrow and we should know something more tomorrow or the next day.”

“It is mysterious, but I’m not at liberty to discuss it right now,” Collins said. “I wouldn’t assume anything until we hear from the doctors.”
