YARMOUTH — Site work for an expansion at Tyler Technologies has begun.

The Plano, Texas-based software company is building a four-story addition with 94,500 square feet of space at its Tyler Drive location. The plan was approved by the Planning Board last December.

Combined with offices on Route 1 in Falmouth, Tyler employs 550 people in Maine. The company, which employs 3,100 people across the country, said the expansion would add 575 local jobs over the next 10 years. The project is expected to cost $17.5 million.

At the March 24 “groundbreaking event,” Tyler Technologies executives and town officials shared details of the project with employees and community members. President and CEO John Marr Jr. said Yarmouth is the perfect place to expand.

“For us, Maine has been an incredible place to grow our company,” he said. “We consider our work force here in Maine to be strategic for our company.”

Yarmouth Economic Development Director Denise Clavette said the company’s expansion is important for Yarmouth, too. She said it diversifies the town’s tax base.

“It sets the stage for strategic growth in Yarmouth,” she said.

Clavette said the company’s expansion is also important because it keeps jobs in Maine.

“It keeps people in Maine, it attracts people to Maine, and it attracts young people right out of college,” she said.

According to Tyler’s vice president of human resources, Robert Sansone, most employees stay with the company for 8 1/2 years, and almost 40 percent have been there for more than 10 years.

“The workforce here is very loyal and we’re loyal to them in return,” Sansone said.

The new building will be “more tech-oriented,” according to Sansone, and will have conference rooms of various sizes, each with technology for making presentations. There will also be an auditorium.

The cafe will be twice as large as it is now and a fitness center will be added.

The new construction will be built at the rear of the existing Tyler Technologies building. The land is in the process of being cleared and the building is expected to be completed by November 2017.
