Former Biddeford Mayor Joanne Twomey has been certified by the Secretary of State to run in the June 14 Democratic primary for the Senate District 32 seat.
Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap on Monday confirmed that Twomey has submitted enough valid signatures to appear on the ballot.
On March 22, Biddeford resident David Flood filed a challenge to Twomey’s nomination petitions, citing several concerns related to the validity of the signatures. A hearing on Flood’s concerns was held in Augusta on March 28.
Dunlap said he found the concerns raised by Flood were not sufficient to disqualify the petitition signatures.
Twomey will be opposed by Democrat Susan Deschambault, who won a special election last week to fill out the unexpired term of former Senator David Dutremble of Biddeford. Dutremble resigned the seat in January due to personal reasons. Deschambault, once sworn in by Gov. Paul LePage, will serve in the Legislature through the November election.
The winner of the Democratic primary in June will face Republican Stephen Paul Martin, who is running unopposed, in the November election.
