A Kennebunkport man who set fire to his Limington restaurant in 2014 was sentenced Tuesday to eight years in prison after being convicted on a charge of arson.
Karl Maine, 59, was convicted after a four-day trial of setting the fire that destroyed Jake’s Diner at 179 Ossipee Trail on Feb. 12, 2014, to get out of $7,000 of business debt, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
“Surveillance video from a neighboring store showed Maine leaving the restaurant and smoke billowing from a rear storage room less than three minutes later,” McCausland said in a written statement announcing the sentence.
Maine’s total sentence was 16 years, with eight years of that to be suspended during a four-year probation sentence.
The building, owned by Aaron Sleeper, was destroyed. It had a value of $142,000, according to McCausland.
