We found the venomous and vitriolic personal attack on Hillary Rodham Clinton by Barbara Doughty in her April 2 letter to be absolutely repugnant (“Columnist’s characterizations of Clinton, Sanders too facile”).

It is surprising that we can still find good, honorable people to run for public office when they are all too often so personally assaulted. We have every right to oppose policies and positions, but when we call candidates and elected officials vile names and abandon civil discourse, we demean ourselves and the political process.

While we are admirers of Clinton’s long career of achievement, we will wholeheartedly support whoever the Democratic candidate is because we believe in many of the Democratic priorities and goals and fear the future that Republican policies and philosophies would bring. We believe it is of utmost importance to America’s future to appoint a fair Supreme Court justice, not a conservative ideologue.

So, as this election season intensifies, we hope Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders fans will unite to vigorously support the Democratic candidate chosen at the convention and that all will agree to a civil dialogue about the important issues that confront all our futures.
