Seven people lost their home in Sabattus to an early morning fire Sunday on Rabbit Road.

Fire Chief Marc Veilleux posted on the department’s Facebook page that a smoke alarm alerted the family to the fire, which was reported at 1:30 a.m. Everyone escaped.

Veilleux said the homeowner is a decorated military veteran, who was out of state at the time of the fire. He was participating in the USA Hockey’s Disabled Hockey Festival in Fraser, Michigan, on Sunday.

However, the homeowner’s wife and their five children were home at the time of the fire. The American Red Cross was called in to find them temporary shelter.

The home was destroyed.

A family dog died in the fire despite attempts by firefighters to rescue the pet.

There were no fire hydrants in the area and there was little access to water, the fire department said. A strike team managed to bring 11 tankers of water to the scene from area departments, including Wales, Lisbon, Lewiston, Bowdoin, Litchfield, Monmouth, Greene, Leeds and Turner.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office was notified and will investigate the cause of the fire.

Relief funds are being set up for the family and more information will be posted on the Sabattus Fire Department’s Facebook page as soon as it becomes available.
