Westbrook assembled a true team victory over visiting Bonny Eagle on Monday, April 25: The Blazes won four of their five matches vs. the Scots, and even the one they dropped went to three sets.
In the No. 1 Singles slot, Westbrooker Daniel Porrell trumped Bonny Eagler Ryan Moody 6-2, 6-0.
“Danny did a tremendous job keeping the pressure on Bonny Eagle’s No. 1 player, Ryan Moody,” said Blazes head coach Sam Johnson. “Danny is an extremely smart tennis player – he understands game situations probably better than anyone else on our team – and he has an astounding ability to elevate his play at key moments of the match.”
In the No. 2 slot, the Scots’ Max Harris defeated the Blazes’ Elijah Doucette, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
“Elijah had an extremely encouraging performance,” said Johnson. “His serve, at times, was untouchable.”
In No. 3 Singles action, Westbrook’s Garett Sanders defeated Graham Munro-Ludders, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.
“Garett played a marathon match and ultimately came out on top,” said Johnson. “I thought his mental toughness helped him win this match more than anything.”
On the No. 1 Doubles court, Blazes Dylan Ho and Jameson Waldon dispatched Scots Will Hendrix and Evan Smith, 6-6 (7-2 tiebreaker), 15-11 (super tiebreaker). Finally, in Doubles No. 2, Adam Blackmore and Ian Douglas (Westbrook) defeated Zach Steinwachs and Cam White (Bonny Eagle), 6-2, 6-3.
“Dylan and Jameson stepped up big time in the super tiebreaker,” said Johnson. “Dylan and Jameson’s games seem to contrast each other: Dylan relies on his speed and ball placement, whereas Jameson relies on his power and great instincts. The two demonstrated great chemistry together.”
Johnson added that “Adam’s great footwork and Ian’s ability to dominate the net helped lead them to victory.”
Westbrook opens the season at 1-0; they followed up Bonny Eagle with a trip to Gorham on Wednesday the 27th, after Current Publishing’s print deadlines. They welcome Sanford on Friday the 29th. The Blazes, it’s worth noting, went just 1-11 in 2015, so they’ve already matched their win total from last year. That makes it easy to hear the sincerity in Johnson’s voice when he says the team is “so excited!”
Bonny Eagle kicks off its schedule with a loss. The Scots hosted Scarborough on Wednesday and travel to Windham on Friday.
