PORTLAND — A handful of King Middle School seventh-graders will head to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in May for the National SeaPerch Challenge.

Last year, the students at King were asked by the Department of Environmental Protection to build 35 submersible, remotely operated vehicles to investigate invasive aquatic plants. The students spent last fall perfecting the devices.

Students then competed in a regional challenge in Bath, and one team of students was selected to go to the May 20 national event. King students are raising money for their trip, and have created a donation page with a goal of $6,000 at gofundme.com/KingSeaPerch.
