The public will have an opportunity to weigh in next week on a proposal in Buxton to adopt design standards that would regulate structures and uses in the town’s business commercial zones.

The Buxton Planning Board, which will review the document, will conduct a public hearing at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 9, in Town Hall, 185 Portland Road. The ordinance would require approval by Buxton voters.

“The business standards ordinance will be a town vote on Saturday, June 18, starting at 9 a.m.,” Krystal Dyer, code office administrative assistant, said Tuesday.

According to a zoning map from Buxton’s Code Enforcement Office, the business commercial zone appears to be in three areas.  The largest one  is a lengthy stretch  on Route 202 southerly from Duck Pond Corner at the intersection with Route 22 to just past Tory Hill with a small patch on Route 4A; and a  spot at the intersection of routes 22 and 112.

Describing the purpose of the proposal, the document says, “A well-designed commercial district being an integral part of the town of Buxton’s future development and necessary to provide jobs, services and a diverse tax base, the business and commercial zone design standards are intended to establish a benchmark for high-quality New England-style architectural design that provide a greater sense of continuity throughout the business district.”

Drafts of the 56-page document are available in the Code Enforcement Office or on line at www.buxton.me.us.

The Planning Board will also hold a public hearing Monday, according to a notice, for Chad and Cheryl Poitras, who are requesting a building size amendment for an addition to the Chad E. Poitras Funeral Home, 498 Long Plains Road. Chad Poitras is a Buxton selectman.
