York police say they arrested a New Hampshire man Thursday after he hit an older man on the head with a brick at a campground, then kicked and punched the man while he lay on the ground.

The York Police Department said officers responded to a reported assault with a brick at Libby’s Campground in York Beach just before 1 p.m. The assailant had fled, and a description of his vehicle was put out, police said.

Officers found the vehicle on Long Beach Avenue, stopped it and arrested the driver on a charge of aggravated assault.

Police said officers determined that a dispute at the campground between Michael Johnson, 52, of Manchester, New Hampshire, and a 67-year-old man whom police did not identify led to a physical altercation.

The man who was hit was taken to York Hospital with serious injuries, and Johnson was taken to York County Jail, police said.
