The spring sports season feels like it just started (and if you were outside last week, you’re still waiting for spring weather), but in truth, the short campaign is already halfway completed for some teams and will reach its midway point for others in the days to come.

There has already been a lot of excitement, with more in store.

Here’s a glimpse of what occurred last week and what’s on tap.

Baseball

Mt. Ararat’s baseball team was 3-5 and ninth in the Class A North Heal Points standings at press time after sandwiching losses at Lawrence (10-9) and Hampden Academy (7-4) around a 7-6 home over victory over Skowhegan. The Eagles were home with Camden Hills Wednesday and Bangor Thursday, go to Oxford Hills Monday and host Mt. Blue Wednesday of next week.

Brunswick was 1-8 and 12th after recent losses to visiting Lewiston (5-2), visiting Messalonskee (12-1), host Camden Hills (3-2) and visiting Cony (2-0). The Dragons were at Lewiston Wednesday, host Mt. Blue Friday and Camden Hills Monday, then play at Edward Little Wednesday of next week.

In Class B South, Morse was 2-5 and ninth following recent losses at Winslow (6-2) and at home versus Maranacook (10-3) and Medomak Valley (13-5). The Shipbuilders were home versus MCI Tuesday and at Gardiner Wednesday, play host to Spruce Mountain Friday, go to Waterville Monday and welcome Nokomis Tuesday of next week.

Softball

Morse’s softball team was 4-3 and 10th in the Class B South Heals at press time. Last week, the Shipbuilders’ skid hit three games after losses at Winslow (16-2) and at home to Maranacook (9-2), but Monday, Morse got back on track with a 10-6 home win over Medomak Valley. The Shipbuilders were home versus MCI Tuesday and at Gardiner Wednesday, play host to Spruce Mountain Friday, go to Waterville Monday and welcome Nokomis Tuesday of next week.

Boys’ lacrosse

Brunswick’s boys’ lacrosse team suffered its first loss in almost two years Monday night, losing at Class B South contender Kennebunk by a 16-6 score (the Dragons’ last setback came to South Portland in the 2014 Class A state final), snapping a 22-game win streak. Brunswick was coming off a 24-3 win at Morse and an 18-11 home victory over Messalonskee. The Dragons (6-1 and second behind Windham in the Class A North Heals) hosted Mt. Ararat Wednesday, then has a showdown at Lewiston Tuesday of next week.

Mt. Ararat fell to 1-5 and eighth after losses to visiting Cony (11-6), Westbrook (13-1) and Edward Little (11-5). The Eagles went to Brunswick Wednesday, visit Freeport Saturday, then return home Thursday of next week to meet Messalonskee.

In Class B North, Morse was 1-5 and 13th after losing at home to Brunswick (24-3) and Cony (19-5) and beating host St. Dom’s (15-7). The Shipbuilders were at Gardiner Wednesday, host Massabesic Saturday and play at Oak Hill Tuesday.

Girls’ lacrosse

On the girls’ side, Morse took a 3-0 record into Tuesday’s game at Gardiner. The Shipbuilders (fourth in Class B North) hosted Brunswick Thursday, welcome Biddeford Saturday and play at Freeport Monday.

In Class A North, Brunswick’s 6-4 home loss to Cony last Tuesday was its third in a row to start the season, but two days later, the Dragons got in the win column, 9-8, at Oxford Hills. Monday, the Dragons lost at defending Eastern A champion Messalonskee, 14-3, to fall to 1-4 and seventh in the Heals. After hosting Mt. Ararat Wednesday and playing at Morse Thursday, Brunswick welcomes Lewiston Wednesday of next week.

Mt. Ararat was 1-3 and eighth after a 3-2 loss at Lewiston and a 9-5 home win over Edward Little. The Eagles were at Brunswick Wednesday and hosted Oxford Hills Thursday, play at Greely Friday and visit Messalonskee Wednesday of next week.

Track

Morse hosted Brunswick and Mt. Ararat, along with Cony and Gardiner, in an outdoor track meet last week.

In the boys’ meet, The Dragons came in first, the Eagles were third and the Shipbuilders placed fourth.

On the girls’ side, Brunswick was first, Mt. Ararat runner-up and Morse third.

Tennis

Brunswick’s boys’ tennis team was 5-0 and second behind Hampden Academy in the Class A North Heals at press time. The Dragons welcome the Broncos Monday. Mt. Ararat had a record of 4-3 and was ranked fifth. In Class B South, Morse was 6-1 and second to Lincoln Academy. 

Brunswick’s girls were 5-0 and second in Class A North behind Lewiston. The Dragons visit the Blue Devils Friday. Mt. Ararat was 0-6 and 12th. In Class B South, Morse was fourth at 5-1.
