A minivan went off Forest Avenue between Deering Oaks and the United States Post Office after striking a city-owned pole Sunday evening, police said.

The minivan traveled over a curb, struck steps leading up to the post office entrance and knocked over a granite block before coming to rest on its side near a flagpole.

Lt. Aaron Pepin said the driver, a 40-year-old man, was transported to Maine Medical Center, where he was checked out for what appeared to be minor injuries. He was alone in his vehicle at the time.

Pepin said the cause of the crash, which was reported at 5:07 p.m., remains under investigation. One lane of traffic on Forest Avenue had to be closed for a brief period.
