I ask my fellow Kennebunk citizens to please vote at Kennebunk town meeting June 14 in favor of the ordinance to ban single-use plastic bags.
The proposal would ban all single-use plastic bags at all retailers. Plastic bags for dry cleaning, dog-waste pickup, newspapers, wet items and for meat, fish and fresh produce are exempt. Paper and reusable bags remain legal.
Doing research last year on the problems that plastic waste causes for sea life, Sea Road School fifth-grader Bella Rossborough and classmates decided to do a report on Main Street merchants’ (mixed) views on banning plastic bags. The selectmen subsequently asked the students to work with the town Energy Efficiency Committee on the plastic bag ban ordinance now before us.
The Energy Efficiency Committee provides free reusable fabric bags to retailers and individuals. It is a wonderful opportunity to join Bella and classmates in creating a more livable and sustainable world.
