Officials in the school district covering Freeport, Pownal and Durham have chosen a Portland school administrator as their new superintendent.

Becky J. Foley, who is now the chief academic officer in Portland, was hired as superintendent Wednesday night during a meeting of the Regional School Unit 5 board.

The Board of Directors said in a press release that Foley was one of 19 candidates for the post and one of two finalists. Foley will begin her new job July 1, succeeding Edward McDonough.

Before working in Portland, she was assistant superintendent of School Administrative District 52 (Turner, Leeds and Greene) for four years, principal of North Yarmouth Memorial School for 10 tears and a classroom teacher in Turner.

She has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Maine Farmington, a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Southern Maine and a doctor of philosophy degree in public policy from USM.

“Becky Foley is an outstanding educator and experienced administrator,” said Michelle Ritcheson, chairwoman of the RSU 5 board, in a prepared statement. “We are confident that her leadership will move RSU5 forward to even higher levels of achievement.”
