The curtain has come down on the outdoor track and tennis regular seasons and baseball, lacrosse and softball have roughly a week to go.

There has been plenty of excitement in recent days and there are a lot of questions left to be answered in the days to come.

Here’s a glimpse at what’s occurred and what’s on tap:

Baseball

Cape Elizabeth’s baseball team is closing in on the top seed in Class B South for the second year in a row. The Capers had their seven-game win streak snapped at Wells last Wednesday, 3-2, but Friday, Cape Elizabeth held off visiting Yarmouth, 3-1, to improve to 10-2. Brendan Tinsman had three hits and an RBI and Nate Ingalls added three hits in the setback. Against the Clippers, Marshall Peterson allowed just two hits in picking up his fourth victory. Pat Macdonald had two hits, scored a run and had an RBI. The Capers hosted York Wednesday, play at Greely Friday, host Wells Saturday (see theforecaster.net for game story) and close at Yarmouth Tuesday.

In Class A South, South Portland extended its win streak to seven games last Thursday with a 6-4 victory over Marshwood. Drew Abramson had three hits, scored three times and drove in a run with a triple. Sam Troiano earned the win and Griffin Kelley got the save. The Red Riots’ fun ended Saturday at Hadlock Field with an agonizing 5-4, eight-inning loss to Portland in a rematch of last year’s memorable regional final. South Portland went ahead, 1-0, on Matt Crockett’s RBI single in the first inning, but the Bulldogs came back against Kelley to go up, 3-1, heading to the fifth. There, the Red Riots got a run on a wild pitch and they tied the game, 3-3, in the sixth, when Zack Johnson doubled off the Maine Monster and scored on an error. Kelley got out of a bases loaded, no-out jam in the bottom of the inning and Portland had two players and its coach ejected in the seventh. South Portland then went ahead, 4-3, when Aaron Radziucz singled home Johnson in the eighth, but the Bulldogs rallied for two runs in the bottom half to steal one.

“We made too many mistakes today,” Red Riots coach Mike Owens said. “We’ve been a very good defensive team all year, but we made too many errors. We haven’t done it all year and it came back to bite us. I was very proud of the way we competed. We overcame adversity. It just stinks to come out on the bad end of it.”

Tuesday, South Portland improved to 12-2 and second behind undefeated Falmouth in Class A South with a 2-1 home win over Biddeford. Abramson went the distance and threw a four-hitter, Ben Conti had an RBI single and Nick Troiano’s walk with the bases loaded produced the winning run. The Red Riots welcome Westbrook Saturday, then close the regular season at Windham Tuesday of next week.

Scarborough enjoyed recent wins over host Westbrook (10-1) and Gorham (6-2), then lost at home to Marshwood (5-4) to fall to 10-3 and sixth in Class A South. Taylor Cookson earned the victory against the Blue Blazes. Nick Lorello had three hits and scored twice, Morgan Pratt and Josh Reed both had two hits and two runs and Connor Kelly and Cam Seymour both drove in a pair of runs. Against the Rams, Mitchell Wedge earned his fifth win and Pratt and Matt Caron both had two RBI. Caron, Lorello, Tim Carion and Bayley Welsh all had multiple hits. In the loss, Carion scored twice, but Scarborough let a 4-1 sixth inning lead slip away. The Red Storm went to Windham Thursday, then close with a pair of huge home tests, Saturday versus Thornton Academy and Monday against Portland (see theforecaster.net for both game stories).

In Class D South, Greater Portland Christian School was 0-6 and 11th (only eight teams make the playoffs) heading into Thursday’s season-ending doubleheader at home against Forest Hills.

Softball

Scarborough’s softball team continues to defy description with its dominance. Recent lopsided wins over visiting Marshwood (9-1), visiting Thornton Academy (12-0, in five innings) and host Westbrook (28-0, in five innings) lifted the Red Storm’s record to 13-0 and they were just behind Sanford for the top spot in the Class A South Heals at press time. Chloe Griffin threw a three-hitter and had three hits in the win over the Hawks and Lilly Volk hit a home run and had three hits total. Maggie Murphy added three hits. Against the Golden Trojans, Volk threw a three-hitter and Laura Powell and Katie Verreault had home runs. Griffin added three hits. Griffin had four hits and got the victory against the Blue Blazes. Powell added four hits and Murphy finished with three. After visiting Massabesic Wednesday, Scarborough hosted Windham Thursday and closes with a home game versus Biddeford Friday.

South Portland was 4-10 and clinging to the 12th and final playoff spot in Class A South at press time following a 13-7 loss at Westbrook and wins over visiting Massabesic (4-3) and McAuley (7-3). Taylor Bachelor and Miranda Gleason both had two hits in the loss. Against the Mustangs, Stephanie Aceto earned the win and had two hits and two RBI. Maeve Kelley added three hits. In the win over the Lions, Aceto earned her fourth victory, had two hits and three RBI and Gleason and Kaitlin Bouchard both finished with two hits. The Red Riots went to Cheverus Wednesday and close at Gorham Friday.

In Class B South, Cape Elizabeth had its nine-game win streak snapped last Friday, 5-3, by visiting Yarmouth. The Capers got RBI hits from Jessie Robicheaw and Megan Nicholson, but stranded two runners in the seventh and fell short.

“We’re solid but we didn’t play solid today,” lamented Capers coach Joe Henrikson. “We had opportunities. We hit the ball hard, but it was right at people. We just didn’t get it done.”

Monday, Cape Elizabeth fell to 10-4 and fourth in Class B South with a 2-1 loss at Traip Academy. Anna Torre drove in the Capers’ lone run. Cape Elizabeth goes to Greely Friday (see theforecaster.net for game story) and closes at Yarmouth Tuesday.

Boys’ lacrosse

Cape Elizabeth’s three-time defending Class B champion boys’ lacrosse team remains atop the Class B South Heals after improving to 10-0 with recent victories over visiting Lake Region (21-0) and North Yarmouth Academy (16-2). Against the Lakers, Jacob Brydson, Tate Perkins, R.J. Sarka and Owen Thoreck all scored three times, while Noah Bates and Riley Pillsbury added two goals apiece. In the win over the Panthers, Sarka had five goals and Thoreck added four. The Capers host Yarmouth in a state final rematch Friday and close with a pivotal test at Falmouth Tuesday, in a game which could determine homefield advantage for the playoffs (see theforecaster.net for both game stories).

In Class A South, Scarborough appears to have the top seed locked up, even though the Red Storm will be sitting idle for awhile. Scarborough held off visiting Windham, 8-5, Friday, then closed the regular season at 9-3 with a 23-2 win at Marshwood Tuesday. Cam Nigro had three goals and Sam Neugebauer added a pair in the win over the Eagles. The Red Storm won’t play again until the weekend of June 10-11, but they do plan to scrimmage to stay fresh.

South Portland, the two-time defending Western A champion, improved to 5-5 and fifth in Class A South with wins at Deering (11-5) and at home over Portland (17-3). Jack Fiorini had four goals and five assists and Cooper Mehlhorn added three goals in the win over the Rams. Against the Bulldogs, Fiorini scored five more times. After going to Massabesic Friday, the Red Riots close at home versus Bonny Eagle Tuesday.

Girls’ lacrosse

South Portland’s girls’ lacrosse team continues to set the pace. The Red Riots made it six wins in seven games last Thursday when they downed visiting Deering, 13-4, behind four goals from Mary Cronin and three from Maddie Hasson. Tuesday, South Portland fell to 6-4 and fourth in the Class A South Heals after a 13-9 loss at Windham. Cronin scored three goals and Hasson finished with two. The Red Riots hosted Massabesic Thursday and close at Noble Saturday.

Scarborough’s skid hit eight games last Thursday with a 15-2 loss at Marshwood, but Tuesday, the Red Storm got back on track with an 18-6 victory at Cheverus behind six goals from Ellie Smith and four from Abby Corbin. Scarborough (3-8 and seventh in Class A South, where eight teams qualify) closed the regular season at Westbrook Thursday.

In Class B South, Cape Elizabeth dropped a 5-4 home decision to York Saturday, then improved to 3-7 Tuesday with a 14-6 victory at NYA. Susie Graham had four goals and Mariah Deschino added three The Capers (seventh in the Heals, where six teams qualify for the playoffs) were at two-time defending Class B champion Yarmouth Thursday, then close Wednesday of next week against visiting Greely.

Outdoor track

Scarborough and South Portland all took part in the nine-team, regular season-ending Cumberland County outdoor track meet last week at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

Scarborough’s boys were first, while South Portland came in second. The Red Storm got wins from Ben Batoosingh in the 400 (53.28 seconds), Andrew Sholl in the 800 (1 minute, 59.86 seconds) and two-mile (9:51.37), Colin Tardiff in the mile (4:28.50), Sam Rusak in the 110 hurdles (15.39), high jump (6 feet, 2 inches) and pole vault (15-1), and their 4×800 relay team (8:36.15). The Red Riots had first-place performances from Ruay Bol in the long jump (21-7.75) and the triple jump (43-9) and Daniel Giuiliani in the shot put (68-7) and discus (156-9). 

In the girls’ meet, Scarborough was first and South Portland finished third. Red Storm event winners included Bethany Sholl in the two-mile (11:44.36), Ellen Shaw in the 100 hurdles (16.07) and their 4×400 relay team (4:24.01). The Red Riots got wins from Juliana Selser in the 800 (2:21.20) and the mile (5:20.62) and Cree Hoyte in the javelin (98-1).

Cape Elizabeth closed its regular season by hosting Falmouth, Greely and Yarmouth. The Capers boys came in third and the girls were fourth. Matt Concannon won the boys’ 400 (55.34). Will Pearson was first in the racewalk (9:46.61). The girls got a first-place showing from the 4×800 relay team (11:42.24).

The conference championship meets will be held Saturday.

Scarborough and South Portland will take part in the Southwestern Maine Activities Association meet at Thornton Academy in Saco. Cape Elizabeth will compete at the Western Maine Conference meet at Lake Region High School in Naples.

The state championship meets for all classes will be held Saturday, June 4.

Tennis

The SMAA doubles tournament was held last week. South Portland’s Mollie Fornwalt and Eden Martin beat teammates Olivia Fornwalt and Victoria Holt to win the consolation finals of the girls’ tournament.

The team regular season has come to a close.

Cape Elizabeth’s three-time defending Class B champion boys’ tennis team finished 10-2 after closing with a 4-1 loss to two-time defending Class A champion Falmouth. The Capers will likely be the No. 3 seed for the Class B South playoffs. In Class A South, Scarborough had its six-match win streak snapped by Gorham (4-1) in the finale, but the Red Storm still wound up 9-3 and will likely be the No. 5 seed. South Portland closed with wins over Biddeford (4-1) and Cheverus (3-2) to wind up 8-4, its best record since 2004. The Red Riots project to be the No. 7 seed.

On the girls’ side, in Class A South, Scarborough went undefeated for the first time in program history, capping a 12-0 regular season with a 5-0 victory over Windham and a 4-1 win over Gorham. The Red Storm, who finished 11-1 in four of the past eight seasons before going unblemished this spring, will be the top seed for the tournament, but No. 2 Falmouth, which has won 137 matches and eight state titles in a row, looms. South Portland finished 6-6 and will likely be the No. 9 seed. In Class B South, Cape Elizabeth closed with a 4-1 loss to Falmouth and wound up 9-3 and second to Morse.

The team tennis playoffs start Tuesday with the preliminary round.
