Shaker Village opens
The Sabbathday Lake Shaker Museum, 707 Shaker Road, New Gloucester, opens on Friday, May 27, and the Shaker Store opens Saturday, May 28. The museum is located within the only active Shaker community in the world, where Shakers continue to live, work and worship. Shaker Village is open daily to the public from Friday, May 27, through Monday, Oct. 10, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Note that Sundays are for worship services only. All are welcome to join the Meeting, as the Shaker church service is called, every Sunday at 10 a.m. sharp in the 1794 Meeting House. One-hour guided tours of the museum and grounds provide valuable insights into the Maine Shaker heritage and culture from the 1740s into the present day. Memorial Day parade
The start location for New Gloucester’s annual Memorial Day parade is the Memorial School at 86 Intervale Road. The parade route proceeds northerly along Route 231, and then goes to the right at the blinker light on to Route 100. The procession stops at the New Gloucester Veterans Monument for memorial services with brief remarks by several dignitaries. Afterward, the parade resumes and proceeds to the ending point, which is the Amvets Hall. Parade participants are to arrive at the school by 8:30 a.m., Monday, May 30, for a step-off time of 9 a.m. For more information, call Bill Kiley at 926-4232.
Rooting for Democracy Plant Sale
The ninth annual Rooting for Democracy Plant Sale, hosted by the New Gloucester Democratic Committee, will be held Saturday, June 4, from 9 a.m. to noon at Lil’ Mart, Route 100, New Gloucester. Plants of all varieties, including perennials, annuals, house plants, vegetables and herbs, will be offered at bargain prices. Arrive early for the best selection. The rain date will be Saturday, June 11. In conjunction with the plant sale, a raffle will be held to win a lobster-of-the-month club membership at Fishermen’s Net in Gray, a $100 value. Tickets cost $3 each or two for $5. The drawing will be held at noon that day; you need not be present to win. For more information, or to donate plants, contact Penny Hilton at 926-4004.
Local history exhibit
The next monthly New Gloucester History Barn Open House will be held on Saturday, June 4, from 9 a.m. to noon. The new, extensive exhibit about local history is titled, “Did You Know?” The public is welcome. The History Barn, a project of the New Gloucester Historical Society, is located at 383 Intervale Road, behind the Town Hall.
Bluezberry Jam will perform June 4 at the Village Coffeehouse of New Gloucester.
