TENNIS

STATE SINGLES: The top four seeds in both the boys’ and girls’ draws advanced to the state singles semifinals by winning two matches apiece – all in straight sets – at Lewiston High.

Of the eight semifinalists, the only one who encountered any difficulty was No. 2 girls’ seed Bethany Hammond of St. Dom’s. Hammond, last year’s runner-up, didn’t lose a game in the Round of 16, but she was tested by No. 7 seed Caroline Ray of Falmouth in a 6-4, 7-5 quarterfinal victory.

Hammond will be joined in Monday’s semifinals by No. 1 seed Lana Mavor of Yarmouth, No. 3 seed Julia Brogan of Falmouth and No. 4 seed Rosemary Campanella of Wells. Campanella breezed through both of her matches without losing a game.
