The Hannaford grocery store in Portland’s Back Cove area was evacuated Monday afternoon after workers thought they smelled propane.

The building doesn’t have propane service and firefighters found no problem, said Deputy Fire Chief John Everett. He said shoppers were coming out of the store as firefighters arrived and had to wait about a half-hour as crews checked the deli area.

Everett said firefighters didn’t smell any propane or detect it on meters they use. He said the supermarket ordered the evacuation in accordance with its policies.
