FALMOUTH — Youthful turnovers.

That’s what both coaches were talking about after Falmouth High’s 14-7 girls’ lacrosse win over two-time defending champ Yarmouth in Wednesday’s regular-season finale for the two contenders in Class B.

Falmouth, which finished its second straight 11-1 regular season, starts four freshmen who have learned how to cut back on miscues.

“We pulled away in the second half and that came from us playing beyond our years,” Falmouth Coach Kait Johnson said. “That was exactly what we talked about at halftime. We (were) throwing away the ball (and) playing like we’re young and we have to not be that. We are young but we have to play more mature and more poised, and they took that to heart.”

For Yarmouth (9-3) the next week will be about fixing those turnover issues. While the Clippers aren’t as young as Falmouth, they are replacing most of their offense from the 2015 title team.

Yarmouth closed the first half with a strong display of team defense and trailed just 6-4.

“I think these teams are very equally matched,” Yarmouth Coach Dorothy Holt said. “We just hurt ourselves with mistakes and turnovers. That’s it. That’s what it comes down to. You know, we’re young and we made some mistakes. We played great team offense, great team defense.”

Both teams will now have prep time before their first playoff game.

Yarmouth (9-3) is expected to be the third seed in the 10-team Class B North tourney and will host a regional quarterfinal June 8.

Falmouth will be seeded second behind unbeaten Kennebunk in the six-team Class B South tourney. Falmouth gets a quarterfinal bye and will host a regional semifinal June 11.

Official playoff pairings are expected to be released Friday by the Maine Principals’ Association. Thursday is the final day to play a regular-season game.

Falmouth midfielder Sydney Bell scored five goals with three assists while contending with Meredith Lane of Yarmouth on the draws and playing a strong two-way game.

“I knew that this was going to be a hard game, and I knew if I had the opportunity I needed to take it and that also means passing the ball. You just have to be smart,” Bell said.

Devon Sarazin and Caitlyn Camelio each added three goals for the Yachtsmen.

“Yarmouth has been a rival for quite some time,” Sarazin said. “They’re the state champions two years in a row. That always gets people excited and we just wanted to come out with a win.”

Camelio is one of the four freshmen starters for Falmouth and is embracing her significant role.

“We’ve got to play big,” Camelio said. “We can’t play like freshmen. We’ve got to play like we’re all the same level.”

Eliza Lunt and Meredith Lane each scored twice for Yarmouth.
