Freeport Town Manager Peter Joseph has nominated Susan Nourse, a 31-year veteran of the town’s police department, to be the new police chief.

Joseph will formally present his nomination to the Town Council on Tuesday, he said in a memo sent to the council Thursday.

Nourse has been a lieutenant for 11 years, which Joseph compared to the “second in command” or deputy chief in larger departments. She has served as interim chief since Chief Jerry Schofield’s retirement in March.

“I am confident that Susan has the required knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as the knowledge of and support from the community, to progress in her career and succeed in the position of chief of police,” Joseph said in the memo.

Joseph chose Nourse following a lengthy recruitment and interview process, including a public forum last month. The other candidate was Marc Hagan, patrol commander of the Brunswick Police Department.
