Portland Water District crews are repairing a broken water main that carries public drinking water to the town of Cumberland.

Town officials were notified of the break Thursday morning by the water district, according to a notice from the town office.

The break in the 20-inch main was found on 20 Inverness Road near the Falmouth Country Club. District spokeswoman Michelle Clements said the district was first notified about the break by police and part of the road has been closed while crews repair the pipe. Clements said customers in Falmouth and West Cumberland were affected by the break but did not know how many.

According to the Cumberland town office, the broken pipe carries water for district customers in the entire town. Residents may notice lower water pressure but should not lose access to water, according to the town.

Water district crews hope to fix the break by Thursday evening, the town reported.
