Remember last weekend and the Saturday heat followed by that evening chill? This weekend, Saturday will once again be our warmest day, but inland areas won’t be as warm and the dramatic evening cool down also won’t occur.

The big weather questions for this weekend will be: When will the rain arrive Sunday, and can you enjoy a few hours of dry weather? It looks like the heaviest rain won’t start before mid-afternoon Sunday, but even the late morning may see showers. The bottom line: It’s a 50/50, dry weather/wet weather split for the weekend forecast. Saturday is the day to enjoy the early June weather.  The radar forecast below from one model shows the rain beginning over York County late in the morning Sunday.  The area will then slowly overspread the state during the rest of the day.

If you’re going hiking, biking, or running…

Dry weather abounds Saturday, with temperatures in the 70s at the coast and lower 80s inland. There will be some humidity in the air and, as usual, the morning is the best time for performing more strenuous activities. The first few hours after sunrise, you’ll find temperatures in the comfortable 60s.

If you’re going beaching and boating…

Northshore of Massachusetts, New Hampshire Seacoast, and the coast of Maine: Tides are high at about noon, give or take, depending on the beach. Astronomically, this is a high tides weekend, meaning less sand at the time of high tides. Boaters will enjoy a light west wind early Saturday, which will become a sea breeze. Sunday winds will be more southeasterly and rather gusty.

If you’re playing soccer, softball, baseball, or golf…

Saturday’s forecast: This will be ideal summer weather. With abundant sunshine all day, don’t forget the sunscreen and sunglasses. Any light showers late Friday shouldn’t impact field conditions at all.

Sunday’s outlook: Fields will become wet in the afternoon, and the rain will be quite steady, with tropical downpours possible. If you are heading south to Boston, the Red Sox play in the early afternoon, and the fate of the game being played fully is definitely questionable.

If you’re gardening…

Rain earlier this week certainly helped plants. This is a good weekend to mix in some fertilizer in your garden if you haven’t done it already. The rain Sunday will work the material into the soil. If you haven’t planted a garden, it’s not too late. All of the warm weather crops can still be planted.

If you’re running errands…

I routinely mention just how hot the car can become when parked on sunny days. On Saturday, with nearly full sunshine, you’ll definitely want to leave the windows open a tiny bit to avoid returning to a hot car. Never leave pets inside the car, as even with some air flow the temperatures can easily exceed 90 degrees.

Sunday is the day on which I would actually do my errands if possible. The weather will be cloudy and cooler, and rain overspreads the area.

If you’re going to a wedding, reunion, or outdoor party…

Saturday is the dry and warm day. Any outdoor activities will not be affected by the weather. Sunday is a different story. As a weather system approaches from the southwest, rain will overspread the area. The rain could be quite heavy in the late afternoon, and alternative plans for outside gatherings will likely need to be put in place.
