A New York man was sentenced Tuesday for conspiring to distribute heroin and crack and firing a firearm while trafficking drugs in Maine.

U.S. Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II said in a release Wayman Sparrow, also known as “Blaze,” 25, of Bronx, New York, was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court by Chief Judge Nancy Torresen to 196 months, which is more than 16 years, in prison and three years of supervised release.

Sparrow pleaded guilty to the charges on December 22, 2015.

According to court records, Sparrow was among a group of New York men who came to Maine in 2011 to distribute heroin and crack cocaine out of apartments in Portland. In late 2012, Sparrow began distributing the drugs for himself.

In March 2013, Sparrow was distributing heroin from an apartment at the Lafayette Arms Apartments in Portland when the leader of the New York group confronted him and engaged in a shootout inside the Lafayette Arms building.

In June 2013, Sparrow was arrested in South Portland by state drug agents and found in possession of heroin and the firearm that he used in the shootout.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and the Portland Police Department.
