The South Portland-Cape Elizabeth Rotary Club has donated $1,000 to two local libraries to support youth literacy programs.

Youth librarians at the Thomas Memorial Library in Cape Elizabeth and at the South Portland Public Library each recently received a check for $500. The additional funds will allow the librarians to purchase materials they otherwise would not be able to through the regular operating budget.

The money will be used to enhance literacy programs through the purchase of books and materials to promote literacy, reading and interest in education among young people. Some of the materials will also assist those for whom English is a second language.

“We have been making this type of donation for 10 years with a view toward increasing the interest in reading and education among our local students,” said club president Scott Irving. “It is representative of our Rotary club’s service to our communities’ youth and our commitment to literacy initiatives.”
