Cape Elizabeth captured their first state title in nine years on Saturday, June 11, besting North reps Camden Hills 4-1.
“It was a great win. It was a great win!” said Cape head coach Sarah Boeckel. “First one since 2007! The girls were playing their best tennis when they needed to. We’ve been building all season to be more aggressive in points. Having the confidence to hit winners, not just wait for the other team to make a mistake. We were also really lucky to have a great assistant, Ben Putnam worked with the doubles teams. He really helped raise their level of play.”
“All the girls played with confidence,” Boeckel, “as if they’d been to the State Finals before. I’m sure they were nervous, but they didn’t show it. As for 2017, I think we’ll still be very solid. We lose four out of our top seven, but we still have our No. 1 and No. 2 singles players, and a great group of girls to fill the open spots.”
Lewiston High School hosted this year’s finals.
