Crews from seven communities spent hours Thursday night containing a fire in the woods off Route 115 in Windham.

The Windham Fire Department was called just before 8 p.m. to the area of 368 Tandberg Trail (Route 115), where crews found a fire that had expanded to 4 acres and was spreading, said Chief Brent Libby.

Forty firefighters from seven departments contained the fire, Libby said.

Crews remained on the scene overnight to put out hot spots.

Libby said the darkness and rough, thick terrain made night operations unsafe.

Members of the Maine Forest Service were on the scene to assist firefighters and investigate how the fire started.

No injuries were reported.

Crews from Windham, Raymond, Gray, Standish, Cumberland, Westbrook and Casco worked to contain the fire. Falmouth, New Gloucester and Gorham provided station coverage.
