COHASSET, Mass. — The Coast Guard says a couple that had been stranded off the coast of a Massachusetts town for nearly 12 hours and was reported missing by their son has been rescued.

Kathleen and Joseph Earner hadn’t been seen or heard from since they went rafting near Rocky Beach in Cohasset at around 4:30 p.m. Monday. WCVB-TV reports they went without cellphones or life jackets. Their son reported them missing around 1 a.m. Tuesday.

The Coast Guard says a helicopter spotted the couple at around 4 a.m., about 8 miles offshore. Fifty-two-year-old Kathleen Earner and 55-year-old Joseph Earner appeared to be uninjured.

Crews got the pair off the raft safely and brought them onto a rescue boat. They were taken to Pemberton Pier in Hull where emergency responders were waiting.
