A Brunswick Police officer hit a pedestrian in the early morning hours Wednesday, sending the pedestrian to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officer Matthew Nicholson, 23, was making a left turn in his marked cruiser from Maine Street onto the ramp to Mill Street at 1:28 a.m. when he hit John Ross, 35, as Ross was walking north across the ramp in a marked crosswalk.

Ross did not use the crosswalk button and was walking against the signal, according to Brunswick Police.

He was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with non-life threatening injuries.

The cruiser had damage to its windshield. Nicholson was not injured.

Police believe the rainstorm in the area at the time hampered visibility for both parties. The crash is under investigation by police supervisors.
