A trail of destruction was left in a Washington Avenue professional building during a suspected burglary overnight Saturday.

The break-in was reported at 10 a.m. Sunday by someone who works in the office building, at 1321 Washington Ave., said Portland police Sgt. Tony Ampezzan. The three-story mixed-use building houses offices of law firms, accountants, a physical therapist and a dentist, among others, Ampezzan said.

Investigators suspect someone forced their way into the building and then broke into individual offices inside, Ampezzan said. He estimated as many as six offices on the first and second floor were seriously damaged during the course of the suspected burglary. The offices had their doors smashed and other damage, he said.

Police do not know when the break-in occurred, Ampezzan said. No one was at the building from Saturday afternoon until the incident was reported Sunday morning, he said. The building did not have an alarm system, Ampezzan added. Officers are canvassing the neighborhood to find out more about the incident, he said.

Police suspect items were stolen. Evidence technicians were probing the scene Sunday afternoon. When they finished, people who have offices in the building could come in and account for any missing property, Ampezzan said.
